Excel SUM Function

Excel has a built-in function called SUM that adds values inside a range.

The type is =SUM.

Note: Both positive and negative cells in a range are added using the =SUM function.

The =SUM function’s usage:

  1. Select a cell
  2. Type =SUM
  3. Double click the SUM command
  4. Select a range
  5. Hit enter

Let’s see some examples!

Fantastic work! Using the =SUM function, you have successfully computed the total of the statistics. The sum of the Pokemon’s stats is 3092.

To see what occurs, let’s alter one of the values in the range. D7(350) type:

Sum -

The total stats for Rattata were modified from (D7)253 to (D7)350.

The total sum was updated from D12(3092) to D12(3189) by the SUM function.

When values inside the range change, the SUM is updated.

To see what occurs, let’s set the Rattata stats to a negative amount. D7(-350) type:

Sum -

The most recent SUM is D12(2489). A negative number is added and its value is subtracted from the range.

Positive and negative values can both be added using the =SUM function.
